What to wear - West Michigan Family Photographer

Clients often ask me "what to wear" for their sessions. So here is my best advice I can give for clothing suggestions for your session. Now keep in mind, this is far from the "old school" line of thinking, as I am far from an "old school" photographer.

I will start with hair and make-up. Please come to your session prepared. Ladies, wear your make-up a little heavier than you normally would. Professional cameras pick up everything, every hair, every pore, every blemish. Yes, I do edit and help clean up and smooth skin, however it's in your best interest to look your very best. Hair, be sure it is styled in a flattering way. Ladies/girls with long hair, I recommend wearing it down covering the ears. Feel free to curl it and add hair accessories however, down is a more natural and comfortable look.

Clothing for Individuals:

Think comfort first! If you are uncomfortable, it will show in your images. Find colors that are flattering to your skin tone, while also keeping in mind your location. You don't want "competing" color schemes going on. Jewel tones, dark rich tones and earth/neutral tones work great. Show your personality! I always suggest to avoid solid white or solid black. Why? From my experience if you are wearing solid white around your face the eye will be drawn to the white and not your face or eyes. If you want to wear white, use accessories with color...scarves, jackets, vests, ties..something to break up the solid white. With black, if your background is dark...well, you can wind up with what I call "the floating head". Make sure your clothes fit!!! Avoid big baggy clothing or clothing that may be to snug and you will constantly find yourself adjusting your clothing. Note to girls/women...when wearing tank tops make sure your bra is not showing (straps or otherwise), I suggest a strapless bra. If you don't have a strapless, then I would recommend layering your tanks, wear one under that will hide your bra straps. Otherwise you will spend your session hearing me tell you.."your bra is showing". Have fun, I adore accessories!!! Hats, scarves, boots and layers! Layers are great as they add texture to your image.

Clothing for families or siblings:

Avoid looking like "twins"..in other words don't wear the same tops and bottoms! Honestly...that drives this photographer nuts!!! You want to look like individuals. That being said, you also want to look like you are together. Color combination's are endless, however keep it to no more than 4 colors in your pallet, colors that they flatter each other and are not fighting for the spotlight.

One of the best pieces of advice I can give is lay out everyone's clothes together that have been picked out for the session. Look it over, if one outfit stands out more than the rest...it probably needs to be changed.

Below I have given you a visual of some samples. These are only samples and by no means what you should wear. The first has several different options, but notice there is 4 prevailing colors {pink, brown, yellow, blue} The second has 4 {blue, white, gray, black}. There is samples of sister, brothers and man/woman styling as well.

Please feel free to bring changes of clothes as well! And don't forget those accessories!! Have fun!
